Legal Action Against Trump by Minnesota and Illinois Officials

Officials in Minnesota and Illinois, both led by Democrats, are pursuing legal action against President Donald Trump. This development coincides with the Trump administration’s efforts to bolster community safety amid rising concerns about illegal immigration, supported by an increase in federal personnel.

According to reports, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents initiated the lawsuit shortly after a tragic incident in Minneapolis where an officer fatally shot a woman who allegedly used her vehicle as a weapon during an operation.

A Reuters article noted that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s lawsuit identifies Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and several immigration officials as defendants. The suit requests that a federal court in Minnesota labels the surge in federal agents as unconstitutional and illegal.

The officials are also seeking a temporary restraining order from the court.

In a parallel move, Illinois filed a similar lawsuit against the Trump administration. According to Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker, this action challenges what he described as the “dangerous use of force” by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Illinois suit aims to limit practices such as unauthorized entry onto private property and the obscuring of license plates to disguise official activity, while also working to prevent U.S. Customs and Border Protection from performing immigration enforcement in the state.

In September, ICE released a controversial list highlighting 30 elected officials, including Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz and Illinois’s Governor J.B. Pritzker, labeled as participants in a “wild campaign” to assist illegal immigrants.

Moreover, it’s reported that since Trump began his second term in January 2025, around 1,800 illegal immigrants charged with violent crimes have been released into communities in Illinois.

Importantly, ICE has targeted serious offenders in Minnesota, focusing on those with severe criminal histories, including murderers and child rapists.

Additionally, Minnesota is currently under scrutiny for allegations of significant fraud connected to its Somali community. Reporting indicates that President Trump has pledged to eliminate funding related to fraud and corruption issues tied to Somalia in California, Illinois, and Minnesota.
