Panthers exercise fifth-year option for Bryce Young for the 2027 season

Panthers Commit to Bryce Young’s Future

The Carolina Panthers have made a significant move regarding quarterback Bryce Young’s contract. On Tuesday, general manager Dan Morgan announced that the team has opted to pick up Young’s fifth-year option. This decision values his contract at over $26.5 million for the 2027 season, according to various sources.

Had the Panthers chosen not to exercise this option, it might have suggested they were considering a different path with their quarterback situation.

This season was crucial for Young, who had the most successful year of his three-year career, leading the Panthers to an 8-9 record and a title in the NFC South. Surprisingly, last season was tough for him—he ended up on the bench for six games after a slump.

The first overall pick in the 2023 draft showed improvement after coming off the bench last year, but he needed to demonstrate further growth for the organization to feel secure in a long-term commitment. This season, he achieved personal bests with 3,011 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, a completion percentage of 63.6%, and a passer rating of 87.8.

However, it’s worth noting that Young also had a career-high of 11 interceptions. Despite that, he managed to run for 216 yards and score two rushing touchdowns.

In an exciting playoff debut, Young faced the Los Angeles Rams and, although the Panthers lost 34-31, he exhibited impressive performance. He completed 21 of 40 passes for 264 yards, tossed one touchdown, and rushed for another, though the overall stats might not tell the full story. His ability to make crucial plays was evident and pivotal for the team’s chances late in the game.

Young’s clutch performance included a standout moment where he connected with wide receiver Jalen Coker for a perfect 7-yard touchdown, giving the Panthers a brief 31-27 lead in the closing minutes. Unfortunately, the Rams reclaimed the lead shortly after.

Notably, since entering the NFL in 2023, Young has recorded 12 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime—the most in the league during that period—highlighting his potential and impact on the field.
