Survived a 500-Foot Plunge

A 52-year-old man from Florida came out unscathed on Friday after his electric paraglider unexpectedly fell 500 feet into the ocean, according to local authorities.

This surprising incident unfolded just before noon off Singer Island near Riviera Beach, and bystanders managed to capture the event on their cellphones.

Sarah Williamson, a lifeguard with Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue, mentioned that she noticed the paraglider behaving oddly after it seemed to be buffeted by a strong wind. “I just started running and radioed my partner,” she shared. “We grabbed our rescue equipment and paddled out together.”

Beachgoers quickly responded, swimming toward the man in distress. Police confirmed that lifeguards and people nearby jumped in to help.

Interestingly, a snorkeler played a crucial role. He dove into the water and managed to free the man, who was caught up in the lines of the paraglider. Williamson acknowledged the snorkeler’s quick thinking, saying, “He was a godsend because we didn’t have masks. He could go underwater and help while we kept him secure.”

The paraglider had taken off from Ocean Cay Park in Jupiter and had been flying south when the accident happened.

Remarkably, rescuers successfully brought both the man and his aircraft to shore without any injuries reported. The man’s name has not yet been released.

Williamson expressed her surprise over the fall, commenting, “The height of 500 feet is incredible to survive. I didn’t think someone could walk away from that.”
