Timing for USPS postmarks could shift for certain mail, and a shipping price increase is expected.

Mail sent via the United States Postal Service (USPS) might not always be postmarked on the same day it is mailed. This update comes as part of the USPS’s ongoing changes tied to a long-term transformation strategy, which also includes planned rate increases set for 2026.

According to a statement released on their website, operational changes in transportation could lead to some mail arriving at processing facilities later than expected. Consequently, this might affect the dates indicated on postmarks.

The USPS clarified that most postmarks are applied by machines at outgoing processing centers instead of local post offices. Therefore, the postmark date may actually represent when the mail was processed rather than when the sender mailed it or when the carrier picked it up.

Martha Johnson, a spokesperson for USPS in Washington, D.C., mentioned that the goal of this change is to enhance public understanding of postmarks, especially regarding the information they convey and their timing in relation to mailing dates. She emphasized that this update doesn’t change the postmark procedure itself but seeks to clarify how postmarks work.

For those who need a postmark that aligns closely with the mailing date, USPS noted there are options available. Specifically, customers can request a manual postmark at retail locations, which can be done without any charge when presented to a clerk.

In a related update, USPS also announced plans to increase shipping fees starting January 18, 2026. This increase is expected to be around 6.6% for Priority Mail, 5.1% for Priority Mail Express, 7.8% for USPS Ground Advantage, and 6.0% for Parcel Select, though the price for first-class postage stamps will remain unchanged.

USPS stated that the price adjustments are part of a broader 10-year transformation initiative aimed at enhancing financial sustainability, with shipping rates being subject to changes based on market conditions.
