Iran Reopens Airspace After Sudden Closure Amid Ongoing Tensions

Iran’s airspace was reopened on Thursday following a brief overnight closure that disrupted numerous flights across the region. This pause lasted around five hours, but many airlines remain hesitant to operate in Iranian airspace due to ongoing tensions and heightened warnings.

Aviation risk monitoring group Safe Airspace had noted that the primary risk for civilian flights in Iran is the potential misidentification by air defense systems during these tense times, describing the overall risk as ‘1 – Do Not Fly.’

Trump’s Comments on Iran’s Violent Response to Protesters

In a statement made from the Oval Office, President Trump mentioned that he had received information suggesting that the killings of protesters in Iran were “stopping.” He expressed caution, saying, “We’re on very strong notice,” and indicated that they would see what that means.

However, Senator Lindsey Graham voiced disagreement with Trump, posting on social media that all indications pointed to the Iranian regime continuing its violent crackdown on anti-government protests. He remarked that the death toll was increasing significantly and expressed hope for assistance to be forthcoming.

Protests Against Human Rights Abuses Continue

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), protests in Iran have now entered their 18th day, occurring amid a nearly total internet blackout imposed by authorities. Their reports reveal that over 617 protests took place across 187 cities, with more than 18,000 arrests and a documented death toll of over 2,600, which includes at least 13 minors.

Government Reaction to the Ongoing Unrest

Despite these alarming figures, an Iranian government official downplayed the reported casualties, suggesting it was part of an “Israeli conspiracy” as the US considers its next moves. President Trump has issued stern warnings to Tehran to cease its violent acts against citizens, reaffirming his administration’s readiness to take strong action.

In a series of posts on social media, he emphasized, “We are locked, loaded and ready to go,” and announced the cancellation of meetings with Iranian officials, calling on protesters to take control. He concluded by warning that those responsible for violence would face significant consequences.
