Several notable veteran members of both the House and Senate have decided against running for re-election, while others, particularly those in their 80s, are looking to continue in office for a bit longer.

A recent survey indicates that 13 out of 24 members of the Silent Generation plan to seek re-election in 2026. One of these members is Washington, D.C. representative Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Interestingly, the 119th Congress is considered the third oldest in U.S. history. Many senators whose terms extend beyond this year have yet to disclose their political intentions.

Republican senators have criticized reported abuses by the Syrian military during a ceasefire amid recent clashes in Aleppo.

As for Congressman James Clyburn, it’s still uncertain whether he will run again; he mentioned he would make his decision in the coming weeks.

Senator Jim Risch from Idaho jokingly remarked, “I don’t know what the Silent Generation is. I didn’t know we were silent.” He emphasized the importance of enjoying one’s job, having time for family, and maintaining good health. After all, if you’re in good health and doing what you love, why not keep going?

He’ll be turning 83 later this year, and by the end of his six-year term in the Senate, he’ll be 89.

On another note, California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters will be 88 years old come Election Day this year. She expressed her belief that her work is far from finished, hinting that it might never truly be complete.

Rep. Hal Rogers from Kentucky, aged 88, commented that he will continue to work as long as it benefits the constituents he serves.

In contrast, some experienced lawmakers like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have indicated that they will not pursue re-election, signaling an end to their lengthy careers in Congress.
