Oprah Winfrey Shares Insights on Weight Loss Journey
Oprah Winfrey, the renowned talk show host, has recently discussed her achievements in weight loss attributed to the use of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications.
At 71, Winfrey began using GLP-1 drugs in 2023. However, she attempted to discontinue the medication after six months to test if she could manage her weight without it. In a candid interview with People magazine, she shared that despite sticking to a diet and exercise program, she ended up regaining 20 pounds after stopping the medication.
“It’s going to be a lifelong thing,” she stated, explaining that similar to high blood pressure medication, she feels she needs the weight loss medication. Winfrey noted that her previous weight of 211 pounds wasn’t healthy, as she was pre-diabetic and had elevated cholesterol levels.
Currently, she has reached a weight of 155 pounds and is committed to maintaining it. Winfrey credited a combination of medication, daily hiking, and strength training for her success, saying it has enabled her to feel in better shape than she did at 40.
In her latest podcast episode, Winfrey invited Dr. Ania Jastrebov, an endocrinologist from Yale University, to discuss GLP-1 drugs and share insights from their co-authored book, “Enough.”
Initially, Winfrey hesitated to use weight loss medications due to their stigma. She reflected on her feelings of reluctance, stating, “I felt like it was cheating,” and she wanted to prove to herself that she could lose weight without assistance. However, she has recognized the challenges many face, noting that public scrutiny about weight loss can be harsh and shaming.
“It’s a struggle that many overweight individuals endure,” she commented, emphasizing the stigma surrounding weight control. She believed that society wrongly assumes people have full control over their weight, when in fact, that control is more complex.
In her conversation with Dr. Jastrebov, they discussed how obesity is comparable to addiction in terms of how the brain responds to food. Winfrey acknowledged that her perception of thinner individuals was skewed; she once thought they simply had more willpower, not realizing the deeper, biological factors at play.
The interview also featured a guest, Amy, who shared her own success story of losing 160 pounds while using GLP-1. She echoed Winfrey’s sentiments about the ongoing public shaming that individuals face during their weight loss journeys.
Ultimately, both Winfrey and Dr. Jastrebov advocated for more compassionate conversations around weight loss and health. They highlighted the side effects often associated with GLP-1 medications, such as gastrointestinal issues, and encouraged those interested to consult their doctors about usage and risks. Winfrey remains determined to challenge the misconceptions surrounding her weight loss journey and promote understanding around the topic.
