Florida Panthers Celebrate Stanley Cup Win at the White House

The Florida Panthers, who are basking in the glory of winning back-to-back NHL Stanley Cups, visited the White House on Thursday. This event came just two days before their road trip concluded. They have a game scheduled against Carolina on Friday, followed by a matchup with the Capitals in Washington. Their invitation to the White House was secured after defeating Edmonton last season to clinch the championship.

In the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, the Panthers beat Edmonton for the fourth consecutive time, which, well, obviously set the stage for another visit to the White House.

“It’s really an honor to welcome the two-time Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers to the White House,” President Trump remarked. “An incredible team, amazing athletes, and players responsible for the biggest achievement in Panthers franchise history.” He added that the team is comparable to historic hockey squads, citing their three straight Finals appearances and the first-ever Presidents Trophy.

During the ceremony, the Panthers presented Trump with a No. 47 jersey, a championship ring, and a gold hockey stick. Trump humorously quipped about the hockey stick, saying, “It’s good for slashing.” He even wore one of the rings during the event, showing it off for cameras as he waved the stick around.

Trump also acknowledged Edmonton, noting that the team has been the Stanley Cup runner-up for the past two years. He mentioned, “You denied Canada a spot in the Stanley Cup,” remarking on the competitive spirit between the U.S. and its neighbors to the north, asserting, “We’re doing much better than Canada, and that’s just fine. We wish them well, and I believe they will succeed.” There was a hint of playful rivalry in his tone.

Matthew Tkachuk, a left winger for the Panthers, stepped to the podium, beaming with pride. “On behalf of the entire organization, especially our players, it’s a tremendous honor to be here… As an American, I mean, I think I mentioned this last year, there’s nothing quite like it. I’m so proud to be an American. This means a lot to me.” It’s worth noting that he seems genuinely enthused by the occasion.

He added, “It takes a price to win, and you’re going to pay that price. Every single member behind me played a crucial role in making this a reality.” Tkachuk also expressed excitement about representing Team USA at the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, stating, “Doing so won’t just be a highlight of my career, but of my life.” A bit of a personal touch there, I think.

Last year, when Trump visited the White House as a guest, the Panthers brought along the Stanley Cup and presented him with a special jersey. That coveted trophy was also showcased during Thursday’s event. Meanwhile, Tkachuk and Brad Marchand have faced injury challenges recently, but there’s hope they could return to the ice soon. As of Thursday, the Panthers were positioned 12th in the NHL Eastern Conference standings.
