Chiefs Coaching Changes Ahead of Next Season
The Kansas City Chiefs will see notable changes in their coaching staff next season, marking the first time in over a decade they missed the postseason.
Head coach Andy Reid has decided to part ways with running backs coach Todd Pinkston, while two other assistants have chosen to pursue opportunities at the college level, as reported by The Kansas City Star.
Defensive assistant Louie Addazio has applied for the offensive line coaching position at UNLV, and defensive line assistant Alex Whittingham will head to Michigan State to work under his father, Kyle, who recently took the reins at the university after the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore.
This is not the only notable change, as the Chiefs also dismissed wide receivers coach Connor Embree earlier this month, concluding a seven-year tenure with the team.
Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is exploring head coaching vacancies, having interviewed with the Cardinals, Ravens, Titans, and Raiders.
Despite the coaching upheaval, quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed confidence in Reid, stating, “He has good plans” for the future.
In his own words, Mahomes emphasized the need for a coach who is passionate about football and dedicated to winning. He mentioned, “Holding people accountable and bringing new ideas every day” are essential for continued success. He added that growth is crucial, indicating, “You have to keep evolving and getting better.”
The catalyst for these changes appears to be the team’s disappointing performance, as the Chiefs ended this season with a 6-11 record, their worst in 14 years, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
