Velasquez Critiques Mayor Over Candidate Support
Retiring Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez (D-N.Y.) has voiced strong criticism against Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who was once seen as a progressive ally, for backing another Democratic Socialist to take her place instead of choosing his own successor.
The situation escalated on Thursday when Velasquez announced her endorsement of Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso for the 7th Congressional District seat and cautioned Mamdani about his support for Rep. Claire Valdez, another Democratic Socialist.
“Honeymoons are short, so people need to pay attention to the task at hand,” she remarked, responding to a question about advice for the new mayor.
Despite previous encouragement for Mamdani, Velasquez’s comments now reflect a notable shift in sentiment. She suggested that he could have done more, although she also expressed a desire to show respect.
Just days prior, Mamdani had publicly endorsed Queens Assemblyman Valdez in the Democratic primary for the same seat. In response, Velasquez announced her support for Reynoso, emphasizing the importance of passing the torch to the next generation. “Our legacy, rooted in justice, dignity, and opportunity, is in Antonio’s strong hands,” she stated.
Additionally, Velasquez had previously backed DSA candidate Rana Abdelhamid for Mamdani’s vacant state position, while Mamdani opted for Diana Moreno, also affiliated with the socialist group.
When discussing the fallout, Mamdani downplayed the tensions, reaffirming his respect and gratitude for Velasquez. He stated, “I have nothing but respect and admiration for Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez and will continue to be grateful for our relationship.”
Asked whether his support for more DSA candidates could lead to friction with moderate Democrats, Velasquez noted, “I think Congressman Velasquez and I are both proud progressives from New York City.”
In a separate remark, a community representative for Velasquez, Samantha Johnson, made some allegations towards DSA Primary Councilor Farah Shurant Forrest, a notable ally of Mamdani.
