Heiress Details Abusive Experience After Marriage Breakdown
A New York City heiress has shared her troubling experience with her hedge fund executive husband, who allegedly harassed her with continuous phone calls and texts after he ended their relationship during the pandemic, according to her new book.
Flobel “Belle” Fairbanks Baden, who comes from a notable lineage including industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt and John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, claims her ex, Henry Davis, mocked her over the phone when she expressed her distress about their breakup. She mentions that he said to her in a sarcastic tone, “Boo hoo. Poor Belle. Always the victim,” highlighting his insensitivity during a very vulnerable moment.
Baden, 56, recounts an incident from September 2020, where Davis, 60, allegedly questioned her feelings, saying, “You lived in a nice house on Martha’s Vineyard. You had everything you needed.” This exchange came after she received a painful letter from him, in which he filed for divorce under stringent conditions roughly six months after his affair with a colleague became public.
After reading the letter, Baden confronted Davis, asking why he had left and abandoned their $7.5 million home. He replied, “I didn’t break up with you. I changed residences,” illustrating his dismissive attitude towards her feelings.
In her memoir, Baden reveals that shortly after the affair became known, Davis began sending her harsh text messages. His anger escalated when Baden’s 78-year-old stepmother, Susan, sent a message urging him to act honorably. In response, Davis reportedly vowed to continue the affair and refused to provide her with any support.
Baden recalls that while quarantining on Martha’s Vineyard in early 2020, she was informed via voicemail about Davis’s infidelity. Although he admitted to cheating and briefly acknowledged the futility of his actions, he later reversed his stance and ended their marriage the next day.
With ties to other well-known figures, including CNN journalist Anderson Cooper, Baden is the daughter of Amanda Burden, a former New York City Planning Commissioner, and Shirley Carter Burden Jr. Her new book has garnered positive reviews since its release through Penguin Random House.
Recently, she disclosed additional unsettling details about the end of her marriage, including an incident where Davis asked her to make him a sandwich right after he broke the news of their divorce to their children.
The couple began dating in 1998 after meeting at the law firm where they both worked, and their divorce was finalized in the summer of 2021.
