Bartenders share their top shot recommendations for bars and restaurants

Bartenders are used to mixing drinks that cater to a wide range of customer preferences, yet sometimes their own tastes shift once the bar closes. After long hours of crafting cocktails, many find solace in familiar, comforting choices instead of indulging in what might be expected. Interestingly, some of these personal picks become classics but remain lesser-known outside the bartending community.

To explore what bartenders choose when they step out from behind the bar, Fox News Digital spoke with three professionals from various regions. Here are six of their standout selections.

1. Coffee Liqueur and Bourbon

Stephanie Cohen from Port of Coal in Mystic, Connecticut, enjoys a unique combination of coffee liqueur and bourbon. “My go-to shot is a mix of Veritable Coffee Liqueur and Ships Belle Bourbon,” she shares. After a hearty meal, she feels that a flavorful shot—without excessive alcohol content—is the way to go. The warm spices of the bourbon complement the honey and chocolate notes in the liqueur beautifully. “Honestly, I can’t think of a bad time for a Mini Stard Coffee Martini,” she adds.

2. Whiskey and Beer Chaser

Aleks Petrashek, who manages Barrel Proof in New Orleans, suggests a whiskey shot paired with a Miller High Life chaser. According to him, “A great shot isn’t just about quick consumption.” They recommend chilling the whiskey to enhance its natural complexities, comparing the experience to diving into a layered flavor profile that begins smooth and sweet before finishing with warmth.

3. Peppermint Schnapps

For those craving something festive, Bartender Magazine’s Ryan Foley highlights Rumple Minze Peppermint Schnapps. He notes that the 100-proof version has been a long-standing favorite among bartenders. This shot offers a refreshing, minty chill, with affordability being another plus, as it typically retails between $30 and $35.

4. Coconut Tequila

Foley describes coconut-flavored tequila, made with 100% Blue Weber agave, as a hit among patrons. Its natural sweetness fits well in numerous cocktails—like margaritas and espresso martinis—and it’s catching on with the bartending crowd, praised for its versatility.

5. Green Tea Shot

Green tea shots, surprisingly, have nothing to do with actual tea. Foley explains that this popular choice combines Jameson Irish Whiskey, peach schnapps, and sour mix, topped off with a splash of lemon-lime soda. “Often you’ll hear these ordered on lively nights out,” he notes, pointing out their easy availability at many bars.

6. M&M Shot

These less familiar shots, made with mezcal and Amaro Montenegro, bring a unique taste experience. While they may not resemble candy, their blend of flavors keeps them in the spotlight among cocktail aficionados. Foley describes the shots as having a delightful mix of smokiness with sweet and herbal notes, making them a favorite for those in the know, though not every bar may serve mezcal.
