Federal prosecutors are currently investigating Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. The inquiry centers around allegations of obstruction of law enforcement within the state. While two sources familiar with the matter confirmed the investigation, specific details have yet to be disclosed.
Officials noted that this investigation is still in the early phases, so it’s uncertain if it will lead to any criminal charges. The Justice Department has opted not to comment at this time.
In response to the news, Walz accused the Trump administration of utilizing the justice system for political gain. He mentioned other political figures, indicating a broader pattern of perceived political targeting. “Weaponizing the justice system against your adversaries is an authoritarian tactic,” he stated, while highlighting that only the federal agents involved in the shooting of Renee Good are not facing scrutiny.
The death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode, who was reportedly shot by federal agents during an ICE operation, has sparked protests against anti-immigrant enforcement. Both leaders have voiced support for these protests in light of Goode’s loss.
Walz called upon the public to document encounters with ICE agents, encouraging residents to record any such events they witness. His aim seemed to be creating a detailed record of incidents for potential future legal actions.
Minneapolis Mayor Frey also stressed the need for peace, which is quite a shift from his earlier remarks directing ICE to “get out of the city.” Meanwhile, the White House criticized both leaders for inflaming tensions against ICE agents, arguing they are jeopardizing the safety of federal employees in their efforts to protect undocumented individuals.
In a warning, President Trump suggested he might invoke the Insurrection Act should Minnesotans continue to interfere with federal workers. He explained that such action would be intended to restore order in the state, a measure not used since the 1992 Los Angeles riots. If enacted, this could lead to the deployment of the National Guard to ensure compliance with federal law.
