Riverview Mayor Charged with Multiple Felony Crimes
Michael Cornell Jr., the 39-year-old mayor of Riverview, Missouri, a small city in north St. Louis County with a population of around 2,300, faces serious legal issues. He has been charged with nine felony sex crimes involving four alleged victims over nearly a decade.
Cornell made history in 2022 as Riverview’s first African-American board member and has held the mayoral office since 2024.
The charges against him include four counts of second-degree statutory sodomy involving minors, three counts of first-degree sodomy or attempted sodomy, along with harassment and possession of child pornography.
It appears that all victims were known to Cornell. Prosecutors assert he exploited his role as mayor to manipulate and groom some of them. The incidents reportedly began in 2016, with the latest event occurring in 2025.
“When we abuse our position of authority, we undermine the trust that the public has placed in us,” remarked Lt. Col. Jerry Lohr, head of the St. Louis County Police Criminal Investigation Unit. “It is disturbing and unfortunate that we must once again rebuild trust in the people we serve.”
One unnamed victim, who was 16 at the time, accused Cornell of having repeated sexual contact with her from 2016 to 2017, claiming that such actions were often accompanied by violence. Another adult male reportedly suffered sexual abuse from Cornell during the same timeframe.
Cornell is also alleged to have coerced another adult male into performing a sexual act in December 2025. A separate incident involves another individual who claims to have faced sexual harassment from May to September 2024, describing explicit comments and unwanted physical contact that caused emotional distress.
“To all victims, we realize this is easy to say because we have not lived your experience or walked in your shoes, but we want you to know that there is no shame in the crimes committed against you. The only person who should feel shame in this situation is Mr. Cornell,” stated Assistant St. Louis County Attorney Portia Britt.
The possession charges include videos depicting child sexual abuse. St. Louis County police pointed out concerns over power abuse, labeling Cornell’s actions as “predatory” and expressing alarm at the involvement of minors.
Authorities believe there may be more victims who have yet to come forward.
Cornell was arrested during a routine traffic stop on Thursday and is now held in a St. Louis County Jail with a cash-only bond set at $1 million. A bail reduction hearing is scheduled for January 22nd. At his initial court appearance, prosecutor Melissa Price-Smith stressed the severe implications of the case, indicating that a conviction could lead to a lengthy prison sentence.
This isn’t the first legal trouble for Cornell. He faced charges for various sex crimes back in 2014 while serving with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Although those charges were dropped, he pleaded guilty to impersonation, a conviction later dismissed in 2021.
Moreover, Cornell and the city faced lawsuits from two former employees alleging wrongful termination due to sexual advances. Prosecutors haven’t confirmed if these individuals are victims in the current case, but they hint at that possibility. Currently, there are other lawsuits against Cornell involving claims of negligence and public record violations.
