Teen driver charged with manslaughter in September NYC accident that resulted in the death of a 30-year-old motorcyclist.

This week, a teenage driver was arrested and charged with manslaughter following a crash that claimed the life of a 30-year-old motorcyclist in Queens last month, according to police.

The authorities indicated that the 16-year-old boy was driving a black 2018 Mitsubishi SUV when he allegedly rear-ended Luis Mareno, who was riding a black 2020 Triumph motorcycle. This incident occurred on the westbound Long Island Expressway at Exit 22A near 108th Avenue in Corona around 12:45 a.m. on September 26.

The force of the collision caused Mareno to fall from his bike, and tragically, he was struck by a 2015 Toyota Sienna driven by a woman in her 30s, as reported by officials.

After the initial impact, Mareno’s motorcycle spun across three lanes of traffic before colliding with the driver-side rear of a parked 2017 Infiniti Q50 along the northwest shoulder of the expressway.

Sadly, Mareno, a resident of Corona, lost consciousness due to severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, all vehicles involved remained at the location, and the young driver was not arrested on the spot. However, after a thorough investigation by the NYPD Collision Investigation Unit and Queens Family Court, he faced charges on Thursday, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, and leaving the scene of an accident.

He is being processed as a juvenile, and his identity has not been disclosed because of his age.

In New York, individuals must be at least 16 years old to obtain a learner’s permit, and those under 16 are not allowed to drive, even with a permit or license from another state.
