Are Haunted Houses Real?
Haunted houses are a well-known trope in horror films, but how much truth is there to this concept? Do real places actually harbor evil spirits?
In a recent episode of “Strange Encounters,” a podcast focused on spiritual warfare as depicted in the Bible, host Rick Burgess sits down with Eric Davis to discuss his unsettling book, “Birth at Spring Hill Plantation.”
This book recounts the true experiences of Eric and his wife, Cindy, as they dealt with the paranormal phenomena following their purchase of what they believed to be their dream home.
After enduring 20 years of a troubled marriage, the couple thought an antebellum plantation set on 34 acres in Alabama would be the ideal escape for history enthusiasts and antique lovers like themselves. However, their bliss was short-lived as horror unfolded almost immediately.
One morning soon after moving in, Eric reported seeing a “dry ice” fog drifting from the barn towards the property’s old hospital, originally used by a doctor to treat wounded soldiers during the Civil War. “I felt an overwhelming sense of evil surrounding me,” he recalled.
Later, Eric encountered a physical manifestation of a demon near that same barn. While watching his wife feed their cat from the porch, he spotted a man dressed in Civil War-era attire with “long white hair” approach her. Initially thinking it was just a neighbor, Eric’s perspective shifted when he locked eyes with this figure, who then vanished into thin air.
Things took a darker turn when Eric suddenly developed an intense, unfounded hatred for Cindy, admitting, “I wanted to see her die.” His family noticed this troubling change, interpreting it as demonic oppression. That night, they cleansed the house with sage, anointed the doors, and prayed Psalm 91 aloud.
“I was pouring oil over the door, shouting to the demons to leave,” he said. He then approached a small storage door at the top of the stairs feeling significant pressure behind it. Rushing in with determination, he yelled, “In Jesus’ name, get out!” Deep within the attic, a loud, piercing scream echoed—a sound resembling a woman crying out.
“I could hear dogs barking inside the house… the sage was burning, and suddenly a draft blew it out. It took about two hours to clear the smoke, but by nightfall, everything had settled,” Eric recounted.
For a few months, life returned to normal, and the family believed they’d rid themselves of the demonic presence.
But then, Eric’s dog, Zoe, began whining and growling for no clear reason. Turning around, Eric caught sight of a shadowy figure, resembling the Grim Reaper, floating just a few feet away from his bedroom wall—it had a hood, sleeves, but no discernible face or limbs. “I shouted, ‘In the name of Jesus, get out!’ and followed it downstairs until it vanished,” he reported.
Emotionally drained from the relentless battle against these forces, Eric looked up at the night sky and pleaded, “God, where are you?” In that moment, a wave of peace washed over him along with a single word: “church.”
Though they were believers, it had been years since the family had attended a church. Eric reached out to a local congregation and explained their situation. Following a Sunday service, a group from the church came to “war” against the oppressive presence in their home.
“I felt it,” Eric noted, standing by his family as the demons seemed to flee.
One church member revealed that there was a sense of unforgiveness in the house. Eric and Cindy gestured toward each other, and they expressed forgiveness, which facilitated a significant change. “That was the root of the evil,” Eric reflected, explaining that even with prayers, unresolved feelings could allow darkness to return.
Ultimately, it took eight months after that pivotal moment for the Davis family to find true freedom from demonic forces.
