NFL playoffs 2026: Bo Nix rose to the occasion prior to injury in Bills versus Broncos

With just over four minutes remaining in the AFC Divisional Round clash between the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally transpired.

Could young quarterback Bo Nix rise to the occasion in a crucial game when his team needed him the most?

Well, he did—leading the Broncos to a thrilling 33-30 overtime victory against the Bills, securing their place in the AFC Championship Game.

After Nix threw two touchdowns in the first half, giving the Broncos a 20-10 advantage at halftime, they found themselves trailing 27-23 late in the fourth quarter. This was the moment that NFL fans had been speculating about for weeks. Could Nix quiet the skeptics and prove he’s the quarterback that Denver depends on?

The crucial drive kicked off with Nix making a pinpoint throw along the right sideline after cleverly avoiding pressure from Joey Bosa, connecting with Courtland Sutton.

Interestingly, that was Sutton’s first catch of the game.

Not long after, Sutton made another catch. However, following a couple of plays that pushed them back, Denver found themselves facing a 3rd-and-11 at their own 39-yard line with just 3:19 left. It was a pivotal moment for both the game and for Nix.

At that juncture, the young quarterback delivered a stunning throw on a dig route to Sutton.

After center Alex Forsyth called for an injury timeout, the Broncos and Nix controlled the clock leading up to the two-minute warning, positioning themselves for a score at the Buffalo 38-yard line.

A few plays later, Denver faced yet another third down, but this time Nix used his legs to move the chains.

They stopped the clock with 61 seconds left, which created a 1-and-10 situation for the Broncos at the Buffalo 26-yard line.

That’s when Nix connected with Marvin Mims Jr. for a beautifully placed pass, granting Denver the lead.

After making a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch, Mims fell to the ground, sliding toward the camera. This was a clever play by coach Sean Payton, designed to take advantage of the Bills’ backup cornerback, Dane Jackson, who had just returned from injury.

Nix’s performance was impressive—he completed six out of seven drives, including two crucial third-down conversions when the Broncos needed him the most.

Although Josh Allen managed to work some magic for the Bills, kicking a field goal late in regulation to push for overtime, ultimately, the Broncos emerged victorious, effectively sealing their spot in the AFC Championship Game.

The game-changing moment in overtime involved a debatable interception by Broncos defender Jaquan McMillan, halting Buffalo’s first possession and giving the Broncos another opportunity after the Bills were forced to punt.

As penalties piled up against Buffalo, including at least one questionable pass interference call, the Broncos found themselves in prime position to aim for a game-winning field goal. Yet, it’s crucial to note that none of this would have been possible without what Nix accomplished on Denver’s last drive in regulation.

However, this story carries its share of painful twists—both metaphorically and literally.

Tragically, Nix’s season came to an end when he broke his right ankle during the final overtime drive. While the Broncos will advance, they will play under the guidance of coach Jarrett Stidham in the upcoming AFC Championship Game.

Nevertheless, what Nix delivered before his injury is precisely what Broncos fans—and the entire NFL community—have been longing for. He truly stepped up when it mattered most.

This chapter of his journey concluded on Saturday night in Denver, but there are still many more chapters to unfold and moments to create in the future.
