I’m Under Investigation for 'Holding a Different View'

Minneapolis Mayor Comments on Federal Investigation

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey mentioned during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the Trump administration is looking into his actions because of differing perspectives.

He stated, “Never did I imagine that our federal government would act against us. Sure, different political parties will have varying viewpoints when they occupy the White House. That diversity of thought is part of what makes our nation unique. However, we shouldn’t deploy troops to a city simply due to differing opinions or because it supports a rival party. While that might occur elsewhere, it won’t take place here. We must uphold these American values.”

Host Jake Tapper brought up Frey’s suggestion that the Department of Justice is investigating both him and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for potential federal obstruction of justice. He asked if Frey had received any formal notice or details about the charges.

Frey responded, “No, we haven’t gotten any formal communication. I’m not sure about the specific allegations, but if this targeting is accurate, it stems from my essential duty as mayor to represent our city and convey the views of my constituents. The federal government’s move against me for speaking out is alarming, not only for Minneapolis residents but for citizens across the nation. This is something that regularly impacts me, along with Governor Walz and Senators Slotkin and Kelly. It reflects ongoing issues we face regarding our First Amendment rights. Article 1 speech is a fundamental freedom that cannot be compromised. Fortunately, in Minneapolis, we uphold and celebrate the First Amendment, which is a core aspect of our identity.”
