Tre’Davious White Expresses Discontent with NFL Officials
Tre’Davious White has some strong feelings about the NFL officiating.
Following a frustrating loss to the Broncos, where a controversial pass interference call led to their game-winning field goal in overtime, White was visibly upset. He banged his helmet in front of linesman Rusty Baines during a heated exchange, which resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
After the Bills fell to the Broncos 33-30, White spoke to reporters with a calm demeanor but delivered a pointed critique of the referees.
“Referees are human and they make mistakes. I think it’s up to the players to decide the game,” he said in the visitation locker room. “When the game is so competitive and it’s down to the wire, that’s the kind of play you make. That’s a pro bang-bang play. As a defensive back, all you want is to get your guy on the ground and end the play. The referees just don’t know the ball.”
White, who is 31, had grabbed Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.’s left arm just as Mims was going for a catch from quarterback Bo Nix.
A 30-yard penalty placed the Broncos at the Bills’ 8-yard line, and not long after, Will Lutz kicked a 23-yard field goal to seal the game, sending Buffalo home early once again.
“I thought I was out of the way of that guy. When the ball got there, I swiped and knocked the ball down and it fell on top of him,” remarked White, a two-time Pro Bowler. “I think the crowd was probably a big factor.”
Earlier in the game, a pass interference call against Bills’ Taron Johnson had already moved the Broncos 17 yards closer to the end zone, giving them an advantageous position on the Bills’ 36-yard line.
Referee Karl Chaffers later informed reporters that White’s actions constituted “early contact and an arm grab that essentially limited the receiver.”
There was also discussion regarding a controversial interception in overtime where Broncos corner Jaquan McMillian took the ball from Bills receiver Brandin Cooks, leading to both players tumbling to the ground.
Bills coach Sean McDermott expressed his frustration over the postgame calls.
This marks the sixth consecutive year the Bills have reached the playoffs but have been eliminated before making it to the Super Bowl.
