Residents in Mexico Clash as Soldiers Disband Town Celebration for Cartel Leader

Local Residents Riot After Festival Cancellation

A violent confrontation erupted this week in Tinaja de Vargas, a town located in the municipality of Tanhuato, Michoacán. Local residents were in the midst of preparations for a large festival, often referred to as “Mencho Fest,” honoring the infamous leader of the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), Ruben Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera. Though initially intended to celebrate a local patron saint, in recent years, the event has shifted to glorify the cartel leader, who is wanted in the United States on multiple drug-related charges.

Authorities intervened, raiding the site where the festival was being prepared. Government officials viewed the event as a potential promotion of criminal activity. Over the past few years, the festivities have included giant billboards featuring El Mencho’s likeness, along with explosive fireworks and musical acts that laud the wanted drug lord.

In response to the disruptions, local residents clashed with soldiers and police, determined to continue the festival preparations. Authorities pressed on despite the chaos and managed to apprehend six individuals armed with weapons. Surprisingly, the arrested were released a few hours later for reasons that remain unclear.

A similar festival took place in 2025, garnering significant media attention when images and videos of the elaborate event honoring El Mencho surfaced.

This operation by the Mexican authorities comes amidst ongoing pressure from the United States, which continues to criticize Mexico’s insufficient efforts to combat cartel activities.
