On Sunday night, a tragic train accident in southern Spain resulted in at least 21 casualties and left many others injured, according to reports. The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. local time near Adams in the Cordoba province, where the first train derailment led to a second train going off the tracks. Approximately 100 individuals suffered injuries, with 25 in serious condition, as reported by local media and police sources.
It’s been confirmed that the train driver was among those who died in the accident. The Spanish rail company Adif stated that train Ilho 6189, which was traveling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed before colliding with another train on adjacent tracks. This second train was headed from Madrid to Huelva and also derailed in the process.
This unfortunate event took place just 10 minutes after the Italian train had left Cordoba. The Italian service, a Fresia 1000, was carrying over 300 passengers while the Renfe-operated train had around 100 people onboard.
A woman who was on the train described the horrifying moments during the derailment, noting that the carriage began to shake violently and the lights went out. Video footage surfaced on social media, capturing the frantic efforts of emergency responders helping passengers escape through train windows.
As a consequence of this disaster, all train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been temporarily halted. Just days earlier, a construction crane had collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Thailand, resulting in at least 22 fatalities, further highlighting the dangers involved in rail travel.
