ICE Arrests Two During Minneapolis Protests

On Sunday, ICE announced the arrest of two individuals in Minnesota. They were suspected of assaulting a federal officer and failing to comply with instructions to stay clear of traffic.

These arrests occurred amidst a protest involving around 200 people, who were demonstrating against various government agencies. Federal law enforcement was present to secure the Whipple Building, which is home to ICE and several other federal offices. ICE reported that “two agitators were arrested after assaulting a police officer and repeatedly disregarding orders to steer clear of traffic.”

“If you attack federal law enforcement, you can expect consequences similar to those faced by these two individuals,” the agency warned.

ICE also noted that there were several other arrests related to protests from the previous week. The events were triggered by a recent incident in Minneapolis, wherein an ICE agent shot and killed American citizen Renee Nicole Good. This occurred as the officer fired into her car and shouted expletives when the vehicle crashed into another parked car.

Many Democrats and local residents condemned the shooting, labeling it a homicide and demanding prosecution for the officer involved, Jonathan Ross. On the other hand, the Republican lawmakers defended the incident, arguing that the shooting was justified.

Subsequently, a week after Good’s death, another ICE agent shot an alleged undocumented individual in the leg during an attempted arrest. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the officer felt threatened as the suspect resisted arrest and exhibited violent behavior toward law enforcement.

Minnesota’s Teachers Union has called for an ‘economic blackout’ against ICE businesses in protest. Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have significantly urged ICE to exit the city. The mayor asserted that, given ICE’s involvement in several shooting incidents this year, public safety is compromised. He described the agency’s conduct as “disgusting and intolerable.”
