Troy Aikman on Texans’ Quarterback Situation
ESPN analyst Troy Aikman suggested that the Texans need to make some difficult choices about quarterback C.J. Stroud after his disappointing performance, which included four interceptions in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
With Houston down 28-16 and just over a minute left in the fourth quarter, Aikman pointed out that Stroud hasn’t shown much progress since earning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year title and making the Pro Bowl in 2023.
“Let me just say this, Joe. Coach Demeco Ryans and GM Nick Caserio need to confront some tough decisions regarding the offensive side of the team,” Aikman commented during the broadcast.
Aikman elaborated that Stroud has been striving to replicate his rookie success for two straight years but hasn’t performed at that level lately. “We haven’t seen him develop. There’s a reason for that, and it needs to be addressed,” Aikman stated.
In his rookie season, Stroud amassed 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just five interceptions over 15 games.
This season, the Texans finished with a 12-5 record, clinching a playoff spot by winning their last nine games. They achieved a solid 30-6 victory against the Steelers in the wild card round, largely due to a strong defensive display. However, Stroud’s inconsistent performance and three turnovers proved problematic against New England, leading to a 28-16 loss.
Stroud managed 212 passing yards, one touchdown, and a troubling four interceptions during the game at Gillette Stadium.
Injuries impacted the Texans, as they were missing their top two receivers, Dalton Schultz and Nico Collins.
After the game, Stroud expressed his disappointment, saying, “I feel like I’ve let people down. I’m not satisfied. It hurts. I’m not used to it.” His teammate, Lyons, reassured him during halftime, telling Stroud to “keep his head up.” Lyons emphasized, “This entire team is rooting for you. We’ve been in this together since the beginning.”
Lyons confirmed that he had no intentions of switching quarterbacks. “No, CJ is one of us. I believed he could turn things around, and he showed improvement in the second half. We had some positive moments then because I had faith in him,” he stated.
Stroud had thrown for 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions, accumulating 3,041 yards in 14 regular-season games this past year.
The Patriots will now move on to the AFC title game for the first time in seven years, set to face the Broncos on January 25th in Denver.
