Fatal Train Crash Causes Passengers to Fall Off Tracks

Train Crash in Spain Claims 39 Lives

A tragic train accident in Spain on Sunday evening resulted in at least 39 fatalities, as reported by the Associated Press.

The incident took place near Adamuz at approximately 7:45 p.m., when the rear section of a Malaga-to-Madrid train, carrying 289 passengers, derailed. The train collided with another one heading from Madrid to Huelva, according to Spain’s railway agency, ADIF.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente noted that the second train, which had around 200 passengers, experienced the brunt of the collision in its front section. The force caused the lead car to derail and tumble down a 4-meter slope. Recovery efforts found some victims’ bodies hundreds of meters away from the actual crash site.

In total, 122 individuals sustained injuries, with 48 remaining hospitalized, 12 of whom are in intensive care, according to reports from emergency services.

A young woman named Ana recounted the terrifying moments following the derailment, stating that “everything went black.” She described the train tipping over and the chaos that ensued, with screams echoing in the dark.

Ana, who was traveling with her sister, was helped out of the train by other passengers, while firefighters rescued her sibling. Both were taken to the hospital via ambulance.

This incident marks the deadliest train accident since 2013, when a derailment in Santiago de Compostela resulted in 80 deaths. On Monday, Minister Puente stated that the death toll was still being assessed, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by recovery teams. He expressed condolences for the victims and their families.

In light of the tragedy, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared a three-day national mourning period for those lost.

Interestingly, reports indicated that ADIF had previously been warned about potential severe wear on high-speed rail tracks expected in 2025.
