Ellen DeGeneres Comments on Minneapolis Unrest

Ellen DeGeneres recently spoke up about the distressing situation in Minneapolis, a city she once referred to as “America’s happiest city.” She shared her thoughts through a video, expressing her sorrow over the turmoil affecting the community.

Since early January, protests have erupted daily in Minneapolis and nearby St. Paul. This unrest follows the Deployment of over 2,000 federal agents by the Department of Homeland Security to bolster immigration enforcement. The situation intensified after the shooting death of Renee Good on January 7.

“I want to say I’m really sorry for what’s happening in Minneapolis and in our country, especially right now,” DeGeneres began in her video. “I filmed my last stand-up special there, and everyone was incredibly kind.” She went on to say, “They say it’s the happiest city in America, and it turned out to be true. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I’m proud of those protesting peacefully. I’m sorry to those who got hurt just by doing what they felt they had to do.”

Reactions to her post were mixed, with some showing support while others criticized her for speaking out. One user commented, “Love always trumps hate!” Another said, “Even if we disagree politically, I agree on this! Peace through unity.” However, some reactions were less favorable. One individual remarked, “Ellen has no idea what’s going on outside,” while another suggested that those protesting should simply cooperate with authorities. A few pointed out their disappointment, questioning why protesters couldn’t just stay home.

After President Trump’s return to the White House in November 2024, DeGeneres opted for a quieter life in the English countryside alongside her partner, Portia de Rossi. The couple left California amid discussions about living conditions in the U.S., making a big move across the ocean.

Notably, DeGeneres had put their Montecito home on the market prior to leaving. Her support for Vice President Kamala Harris has also been evident on social media, where she reshares messages endorsing Harris’s ambitions for the presidency.

Since the end of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” following allegations of a toxic work environment, she has largely stepped back from the public eye. DeGeneres recently shared that she’s taken up gardening and even got a chicken, as she navigates life outside of show business.
