Curt Cignetti’s Frustration with Championship Officials
Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti voiced his discontent regarding college football championship officials after a recent game. Speaking with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, he highlighted a missed personal foul on quarterback Fernando Mendoza during a hit against the Miami Hurricanes. The hit was significant enough to leave Mendoza bloodied.
Cignetti remarked, “There are three quarterback personal fouls that were not called on one drive. It needs to be called because it’s a clear personal foul. I’m all for letting them play, but once they cross the line, it has to be called. It was a black and white call.”
Interestingly, Mendoza managed to hold his ground, helping to secure a 10-point lead for Indiana by halftime.
In the game, Mendoza completed 12 of 17 passes for 116 yards. Indiana’s scoring kicked off with a field goal in the first quarter. Later, with just over six minutes left in the second quarter, Mendoza led the team to a touchdown, handing off to Riley Nowakowski for a touchdown run, bringing the score to 10-0 in their favor.
As the first half came to a close, the Hurricanes began to regain some momentum. However, a missed field goal attempt by Carter Davis highlighted their struggles, as Miami managed only three first downs despite controlling the ball for nearly 12 minutes during the half.
