NFL Replay Officials Surprise Teams
The news about the NFL’s substantial replay official staff seems to have taken teams by surprise.
During a Sunday appearance on NFL Network, former umpire and rules analyst Walt Anderson shed some light on this, particularly regarding the Bills’ controversial interception during a recent game.
Anderson explained, “They actually have a team of instant replay officials. There are multiple people reviewing every play simultaneously. Every play is reviewed; it just doesn’t pause the game. The replay folks in New York and at the stadium are analyzing the play from every possible angle.” It’s kind of mind-boggling, right?
A senior executive from one team expressed confusion on Pro Football Talk, wondering, “Who exactly is this entire replay staff? Why am I just hearing about them now?” It sounds like most teams weren’t aware of this structure.
In a tense moment during the game, Bills receiver Brandin Cooks caught a pass, but it was taken away by Broncos cornerback Jaquan McMillian. Afterward, referee Karl Chaffers explained to reporters that Cooks lost control after hitting the ground before completing the catch. This explanation didn’t sit well with many viewers, including the now-fired Bills coach Sean McDermott, who criticized the postgame decisions and the lack of a deeper review process. Those calls can really stir the pot.
Anderson mentioned that if replay officials confirm the on-field ruling, their aim is to keep the game flowing without unnecessary delays. He pointed out that CBS handled the explanation well, but this drew criticism from NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci, a former head coach with the 49ers and Lions. Mariucci stated, “I think Carl should have communicated that to everyone, not just CBS. I’d prefer to hear it from him.” It’s interesting how perspectives can differ so much, isn’t it?
