Indiana University Football Wins National Championship
In a remarkable turn of events, Indiana University, once dubbed the underdog of college football, has claimed the national championship title, fueled by an unexpected head coach and a quarterback dedicated to giving praise to God.
The Hoosiers triumphed over Miami with a score of 27-21 in the championship game held on Monday night. This victory marks the first time the university has secured a title in college football, concluding a transformative journey that has reshaped perceptions within the sport.
Following a disappointing 3-9 finish in 2023, Indiana recruited Curt Cignetti from James Madison University, leading the team to an impressive 11-2 record and a playoff spot in 2024. This season saw an unbeaten run, finishing 16-0—an achievement not seen in over a century in college football.
Remarkably, just until November, Indiana held the record for the most losses in major college football history, but now it stands at the pinnacle of the sport.
Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who took home the Heisman Trophy as the season’s outstanding player, was named the offensive MVP for the championship match. His emotional reaction post-victory was palpable as he broke into tears.
“I want to give all the glory and thanks to God,” Mendoza expressed in an interview shortly after the game.
His journey resembles that of a Cinderella story. In 2022, he was merely the 140th-ranked quarterback and the 2,149th among high school seniors, with minimal interest from top college programs. Eventually, he accepted a scholarship from California before transitioning to Indiana before this season.
Having grown up in Miami, close to where the game took place, Mendoza reflected, “I was a two-star recruit coming out of high school. My walk-in offer to the University of Miami was turned down. It’s a full circle moment to play in Miami for all your friends and family… I just give all the glory to God.”
His faith plays a significant role in his narrative. When asked about pre-game rituals, Mendoza candidly admitted he doesn’t listen to hype music; instead, he focuses on prayer and meditation to maintain his composure.
On Christmas Eve, shortly after receiving the Heisman, he returned to St. Paul Catholic Center at Indiana University, sharing his achievement with the priests who guided him. “He told us, ‘This church and all of you are a big reason why this happened,'” remarked Pastor Patrick Hyde.
