Mayor Zohran Mamdani challenged on contentious appointees during 'The View'

Mayor Zoran Mamdani Addresses Controversial Appointee Statements on “The View”

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani appeared on “The View” on Tuesday, discussing remarks made by Sea Weaver, the director of the Mayor’s Office of Tenant Protection, among other appointees.

Co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin noted that some of these appointees had faced criticism for past social media posts, a common occurrence with new administrations. She specifically referenced comments made by the new chief capital officer that had been deleted, pointing out that tenant advocates had characterized homeownership as a tool of white supremacy and called for more communists to hold public office. Griffin asked Mamdani how this messaging might be perceived by New Yorkers and what his response would be.

Mamdani responded by emphasizing that New Yorkers should seek to understand his views through his own words as mayor. “If you want to know my opinions,” he stated, “you’ll find them in my words as mayor of New York City. I aim to create a city that every New Yorker can afford, whether they’re renters or homeowners, or aspire to homeownership.” There’s a clear focus on trying to bridge divides, I think.

Mamdani further elaborated on the initiatives of the Tenant Protection Authority, highlighting their recent achievements. “In the last 20 days, we’ve taken action against a landlord with multiple violations, securing a substantial bond for repairs. Sometimes, it can feel like politicians are just throwing out numbers that don’t really resonate with people,” he explained.

Weaver, affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, has drawn attention for various controversial social media posts. One such post from 2019 described private property as “a weapon of white supremacy disguised as ‘wealth-building’ public policy.” Another post encouraged the election of more communists. In a widely shared video from 2021, Weaver suggested that real estate should be viewed as collective rather than individual property.

Mamdani also expressed support for abolishing ICE during his interview, indicating a commitment to progressive policies in his administration.
