Darian Mensah Permitted to Join Transfer Portal After Judge Rejects Duke Football's Efforts to Prevent Him: REPORT

Duke Football’s Quarterback Faces Unexpected Departure to Transfer Portal

The college football transfer portal always seems to bring a mix of surprises each year.

In an unexpected twist just before the deadline, Duke football announced that its quarterback, Darian Mensah, has entered the transfer portal. This decision caught the program completely off guard, prompting Duke to take legal action in an attempt to prevent Mensah from leaving.

According to Pete Thamel, a Senior College Football Writer at ESPN, Duke initially sought a judicial order to block Mensah’s entry into the transfer portal. However, the judge dismissed this request, allowing Mensah to remain in the portal, which raises significant questions about the enforceability of his existing contract with the university.

The complaint reveals that in July 2025, Mensah signed a multi-year contract with Duke that extends until December 31, 2026, granting the university exclusive rights to his name, image, and likeness related to college football. The lawsuit claims, “Duke University has fulfilled all of its obligations under its contract.” It also notes that as recently as December 2025, Mensah had expressed his commitment to Duke, but he suddenly changed his mind just hours before the NCAA’s transfer deadline.

Last season, Mensah had signed a two-year transfer agreement to move from Tulane to Duke. His choice to enter the transfer portal right before the deadline was particularly striking, especially since he had publicly declared his plan to return to the Blue Devils on December 19.

During his time at Duke, Mensah completed an impressive 66.8% of his passes, totaling 3,973 yards with 34 touchdowns and only six interceptions, plus a rushing touchdown. He also earned All-ACC Second Team honors and played a key role in helping the Blue Devils win their first ACC title since 1989.

At this point, Miami, another school in the ACC, seems to be the frontrunner for acquiring Mensah, especially as they are looking to fill a critical gap at the quarterback position due to impending retirements.

The Daily Caller has reached out to Duke University for comment.
