Jon Stewart advises against trusting TV personalities in politics and declines to run for office

On Sunday, comedian Jon Stewart took a moment to address suggestions from his audience that he should consider running for office. He was quick to caution that while some celebrities have made the leap into politics—like former President Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, or even Donald Trump—this might not be the best approach to selecting our political leaders.

When an audience member proposed the idea of him running for president, the crowd erupted in cheers, but Stewart seemed to push back against it. “That’s really nice of you,” he remarked, adding that it feels pretty unsettling to think about having that kind of influence over people’s lives.

Interestingly, he noted that other talk show hosts have faced similar calls to enter politics, suggesting that this trend reflects a growing frustration with current leadership. “It’s a question that pops up frequently,” he continued, “and it highlights a deeper despair about the status quo—even if we might not fully understand why.”

He expressed that when people resonate with comments made on TV, there’s often a subsequent thought along the lines of ‘Wow, that person should be president.’ But he humorously compared this phenomenon to being caught in an episode of “The Twilight Zone.”

Stewart also weighed in on the controversial comparisons between Trump and Adolf Hitler, arguing that equating them isn’t accurate, primarily because Hitler had a significant amount of domestic support—something not mirrored in Trump’s presidency.

In a personal touch, he recounted an anecdote that highlights the shifting tides of public opinion in his own community. He reflected on how the same individuals who once ridiculed President Biden are now expressing quiet embarrassment about the Trump administration. “In my town, people were all in for Trump,” he said, recalling how visits to his local deli have changed. “When I’d walk in, jokes about Biden were common. Now, they just ask me, ‘What kind of sandwich would you like?'”

The White House hasn’t provided any comments regarding Stewart’s remarks.
