Rick Pitino at St. John's close to achieving 900 career wins

Rick Pitino on the Verge of 900th Victory

Rick Pitino is close to achieving a remarkable milestone: his 900th career win. After clinching his 899th victory on Tuesday night, he has a chance to hit 900 this Saturday when St. John’s faces off against Xavier, where his son Richard is the head coach. Currently, Pitino is tied with Bob Knight for fourth place in all-time coaching victories.

Reflecting on this unique situation, Pitino shared, “It’s quite surprising that, four games ago, [St. John’s media relations staffer] Kenny Klein pointed out that if we keep winning, we could reach 900 against my son.” He continued, “What are the odds that after 50 years of coaching, my 900th win would be against my own child? Either way, it’s a profound achievement for me and my family.” This victory followed a hard-fought 65-60 win over Seton Hall, in front of nearly 14,000 fans at Madison Square Garden.

This upcoming match will mark the first time the two coaches face each other in a conference game, as Richard took the reins at Xavier this offseason. The Musketeers have been on a roll, especially at home, recently defeating Providence and Butler.

“It should be a lot of fun, a fantastic game,” Pitino remarked. “But if we lose, I might just leave my team right here in Cincinnati.” It’s clear he’s relishing the challenge.

The two previously met last season when Richard was coaching New Mexico State, where St. John’s emerged victorious in that nonconference matchup.

Seton Hall’s coach, Shaheen Holloway, acknowledged Reuben Play’s role in St. John’s comeback win against his team. Play, stepping in due to Zuby Ejiofor’s foul troubles, contributed six points and four rebounds in crucial moments. St. John’s managed to outscore Seton Hall by six points within a tight 15-minute span.

“He really came in and made a difference,” Holloway commented. “He was everywhere, giving them the energy they needed.”

With this latest win, St. John’s is now 7-1 in Big East play for the second straight season, a feat last accomplished in 1998-1999.
