Jack Hughes Excited for Olympic Opportunity
Jack Hughes, known for his role with the New Jersey Devils, is preparing for an exhilarating experience next month as he dons the USA jersey once again. Since joining the U.S. National Development Program in 2017 and being the top overall pick in 2019, he has participated in various international tournaments, including the World Juniors and the Four Nations Tournament.
Reflecting on the upcoming Olympic competition, Hughes noted that he feels the buzz of excitement. “Last year was a wild build-up,” he said, as the number of countries vying for Olympic gold is set to rise to twelve, adding a global dimension to the event.
In a recent conversation, Hughes expressed his eagerness, stating, “I haven’t really played internationally since the 2019 World Juniors, so to be able to play in the Olympics… it’s the biggest stage.” He recalled how last year’s tournament was a different experience, filled with intense competition. He mentioned how fast-paced and skill-oriented the game was, leading to moments where minor mistakes could have significant consequences.
While he acknowledges the challenge of potentially not facing Canada in the Olympics, he recalls the thrill of their last matchup. Hughes mused about possibly watching “Miracle” for a dose of inspiration while in Milan.
Hughes also touched on the pressures accompanying the Olympics. His Devils are in a tight playoff race, coinciding with the Olympic schedule. He shared, “I don’t want to miss the season at all… we’re trying to win some hockey games.” The hectic schedule of late-night travels and a packed season has him focusing on his fitness and recovery. He mentioned using supplements to stay in shape, especially after a tough start to the season.
Reflecting on the upcoming weeks, Hughes conveyed a mix of excitement and urgency. “The next few weeks are really important… playing in the NHL, then transitioning to the Olympics, and coming back for a playoff push.” With everything on the line, he seems ready for the whirlwind ahead.
