Steelers Interview Mike McCarthy for Head Coaching Position

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly taking a serious look at Mike McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy.

The former head coach of the Packers and Cowboys had an in-person interview for the position on Wednesday, as confirmed by the team.

After parting ways with the Cowboys following the 2024 season, McCarthy spent last year out of the NFL. He had also interviewed for the Titans’ head coach role prior to their selection of Robert Saleh.

There were earlier reports connecting McCarthy to the Giants before they chose John Harbaugh as their manager.

Since the departure of long-time head coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers have explored a range of candidates. They have interviewed various defensive coordinators, including Brian Flores from the Vikings, Jesse Minter from the Chargers, and Chris Shula from the Rams.

McCarthy, who secured a Super Bowl with the Packers in 2010, has maintained a solid record over his 18 years as a head coach, amassing a 174-112-2 regular season record along with 12 playoff appearances.

During the years 2020 to 2024, McCarthy’s teams notched three seasons with 12 wins while with the Cowboys, yet the franchise experienced a downturn following a 7-10 record in 2024.

The successor to Tomlin—a coach who led the Steelers for 19 seasons and clinched the Super Bowl title in 2008—will be just the fourth head coach for the team since 1969, following notable figures like Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.

There are whispers that the Steelers might also be on the lookout for a new starting quarterback. It has been suggested that Aaron Rodgers could either leave or consider retirement after Tomlin’s exit. However, reports indicated that there’s still a chance the Steelers could look to bring Rodgers back in 2026.

Despite their regular season achievements, the Steelers have faced challenges in the playoffs recently, having lost six consecutive postseason games under Tomlin, including a wild card defeat to the Texans earlier this month.
