Matthew Stafford Wins PFWA MVP Award for 2025
Matthew Stafford has not just delivered a standout season in 2025; he has also made a significant mark within the world of professional football. The quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams has been named the 2025 PFWA Most Valuable Player, following a decision made by the American Pro Football Writers in a vote held Wednesday afternoon.
In the realm of football, this particular award carries a lot of credibility. It’s based on the insights of individuals who know the game deeply, observing every nuance as it unfolds each Sunday.
Awards often serve as precursors to future achievements. Interestingly, since 2004, the PFWA MVP Poll has accurately predicted the NFL MVP each season—except for last year when voters favored the Baltimore Ravens’ QB, Lamar Jackson, who edged out Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen for the award.
Currently, Stafford and New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye are viewed as the leading contenders for this year’s accolade, which will be announced in just a couple of weeks at the NFL Awards Ceremony in San Francisco.
At 37 years old and in his 17th season, Stafford demonstrated remarkable skill and control. He led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdown passes, breaking records within the Rams franchise. His eight interceptions were surprising, especially given the challenges of consistently attacking the field. Notably, he had nine games with at least three touchdowns and no picks. In a remarkable two-month stretch, he threw 318 consecutive passes without an error, setting an NFL record with 28 touchdown passes while remaining interception-free.
This recognition marks Stafford’s first PFWA MVP win, adding to the award’s long history—it’s the 52nd time it’s been given out and the fourth time for the Rams, following in the footsteps of legends like Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk. It reinforces the perspective that quarterbacks often define an era in the league.
On the same day, other PFWA awards were announced, including the 2025 Offensive Player of the Year awarded to Jackson Smith-Njigba of the Seattle Seahawks and 2025 Defensive Player of the Year to Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns.
