Mets Make Big Moves: Exciting Trades and Signings
Things have been heating up for the Mets recently. Just a quick recap—six days ago, owner Steve Cohen made headlines with a light-hearted comment about the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, referencing a joke that had gone viral. And then the Dodgers, well, they managed to outplay the Mets, but that’s beside the point.
Now, moving on to the juicy stuff: Cohen took to the stage again Wednesday night, clearly buzzed about the whirlwind of activity in the past 24 hours. After wrapping up the signing of Bo Bichette on Tuesday, the Mets didn’t slow down. They also secured a trade for White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and reached an agreement with hard-throwing reliever Luis Garcia. In a major league shake-up, they also welcomed Brewers pitchers Freddy Peralta and Tobias Meyers to the team.
“This week has been amazing. Let’s go Mets!” Cohen shared on social media shortly after finalizing the trade with Milwaukee.
In case anyone missed it, last Thursday, Cohen had some fun on social media by posting, “If you see smoke, let me know,” right as the Tucker lawsuit drama unfolded, not long before he signed a hefty four-year, $240 million deal with the Dodgers.
Just hours after the Mets’ $220 million offer to Tucker fell through, they traded Bichette for a three-year deal. It was a tense moment, especially with the Phillies lurking around, potentially looking to secure him for the long term.
The trades happened in rapid succession, bringing in Robert, a 2023 All-Star, along with Peralta and Myers. Peralta, 29, might just be the ace the Mets have been searching for. He had a standout season last year with a 2.70 ERA and was the National League leader in wins with 17. Notably, he’s also pitched over 165 innings the last three seasons.
Now, it’s worth noting that with these trades, the Mets did part ways with four young players, including three prospects. Utility player Luis Angel Acuña and minor league pitcher Truman Polley went to the White Sox, while pitcher Brandon Sproat and infielder/outfielder Jett Williams were sent to Milwaukee.
