Australian Open Match Leads to Tension Between Osaka and Cirstea
During the Australian Open on Thursday, tennis players Naomi Osaka and Sorana Cirstea found themselves in a heated exchange after their match. Osaka emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Following the match, as she extended her hand for a post-match handshake, Cirstea seemed frustrated and walked away to talk to the referee. Osaka, surprised, asked, “What was that for?”
It appeared that Cirstea wasn’t pleased with Osaka’s enthusiasm during the game. In a post-match interview, Osaka remarked, “Apparently she was upset about my energy, but I don’t think it matters.” She acknowledged Cirstea as a strong competitor and noted that this could be her final Australian Open appearance, expressing some regret about Cirstea’s emotions during their encounter.
Osaka also mentioned that she might have asked Cirstea to tone it down a bit during the game.
In line with the tournament, Osaka, seeded 16th, has previously won the Australian Open twice. However, since 2021, she has struggled to advance past the third round. She anticipates facing Madison Inglis in the upcoming third round on Friday.
Cirstea had already announced that the 2026 season would be her last in professional tennis, and she managed to reach only the fourth round at this year’s event.
Interestingly, while Osaka has not claimed any Grand Slam titles lately, she has accumulated three career singles titles. It’s a mixed bag for her as she navigates through this year’s Open.
