Erica Kirk Criticizes The Washington Post’s Focus on Her Wardrobe
At a religious revival event on Wednesday, Erica Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), fired back at The Washington Post for what she described as its “obsession” with her clothing choices.
Earlier this month, the newspaper published an article that stated Kirk was “walking a fine line in glittering pantsuits,” highlighting her fashion decisions since the assassination of her husband, Charlie Kirk, last year.
Kirk, a mother of two young kids, has been visibly active in the public sphere, promoting traditional values like marriage and motherhood. The article suggested that her fashion reflects a balancing act, trying to fit into mainstream secular and political circles without being misidentified as a career woman or feminist. A fashion writer from The Post remarked on this issue.
While addressing attendees at the kickoff of TPUSA Faith’s first “Make Heaven Crowded” tour outside Los Angeles, Kirk drew parallels from the Garden of Eden. She related Eve’s “obsession” with the forbidden fruit to the distractions that prevent people from focusing on what truly matters.
“Right now, we’re in a very critical time,” Kirk noted at Harvest Church in Riverside, California. “There is a beautiful, God-given curiosity that’s innocent, but there’s also a curiosity that diverts us from what is essential.”
She added, “I see this play out constantly. It’s distracting. It feeds fear. It can even make you question your own faith. Our culture seems endlessly curious about things that just don’t matter.”
In a light-hearted jab at The Washington Post, she commented on the article regarding her wardrobe. “If you’re critiquing the clothing of a widow, that says a lot about where we’ve come,” she quipped.
She further emphasized, “By the way, I’m a sneaker enthusiast. If you’re curious, I wear black Air Force shoes because they’re comfortable. Seriously, I’m just me; I don’t care about a stylist.” This elicited cheers from the audience.
Kirk also encouraged the Post to engage more with nature. “Perhaps you should reconnect with the outdoors? Charlie loved hiking; maybe consider taking that up as a hobby. Just let it go,” she said.
The Washington Post has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding Kirk’s remarks.
Additionally, critics expressed their discontent on social media regarding the article. Former Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema commented on the situation, asserting, “No matter how loudly I scream, this situation will never end.” Jack Posobiec, a friend of the Kirk family, added, “Erica isn’t prioritizing marriage because the radical left killed her husband. They won’t stop attacking the Kirk family.” A reporter from Axios shared his own experiences, recalling guidance against commenting on women’s clothing due to potential perceptions of sexism.
