Peace Commission Announcement in Davos
During the announcement of the peace commission’s charter in Davos, Switzerland, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump’s peace commission is also an “action commission.” He made these remarks while sharing the stage with Trump and other global leaders.
Rubio emphasized, “This is not just a peace commission. This is a commission of action, just as President Trump is a president of action.”
He continued to reflect on the nature of discussions at international forums, noting, “People often like to give speeches. I’ve been on many of these forums, and they’re not unhelpful… but sometimes you see people delivering scripted statements that lead nowhere. This is a group of action-oriented leaders.”
Rubio mentioned that the commission’s initial focus would be Gaza following Trump’s signing of a 20-point Middle East peace deal last October. “This vision for Gaza and the wider region is not only possible, it’s promising—it is our destiny if we commit the necessary time and effort. I believe this Council will do that,” he remarked.
He added, “However, I also think this represents what can be achieved in other parts of the world. While we must remain focused on the current situation, there’s potential in resolving other, seemingly unresolvable conflicts.”
Rubio kicked off his comments by attributing the formation of the board to Trump’s vision. He reflected on past perceptions of the situation in Gaza, noting how many believed it to be unsolvable. “Just a few months ago, people thought this was intractable. Many felt there would be no resolution without more violence. Tragically, some institutions that have served us over the years struggled to make progress. However, President Trump had the vision and courage to tackle the impossible, believing it could be achieved,” he said.
After Rubio’s comments, President Trump expressed his appreciation, quipping at the World Economic Forum, “He will lose his position as the highest secretary of state.”
