Trinity Rodman Signs Record-Setting Contract with Washington Spirit
Trinity Rodman has decided to stay in the United States after securing an unprecedented contract with the Washington Spirit of the NWSL. At just 23 years old, she will reportedly earn over $1 million annually, positioning her as the highest-paid female soccer player in the world, according to her agent Mike Cenkowski.
This new contract will keep Rodman with the Spirit until 2028. Expressing her thoughts, she mentioned, “I’ve made the DMV my home, and the Spirit my family. I knew this is where I wanted to enter the next chapter of my career.” There’s a sense of pride in what they’ve achieved since her rookie year, and she seems genuinely excited about the club’s future.
On Thursday night, she officially signed the contract, concluding a period of uncertainty. Having been a free agent since her last deal expired at the end of 2025, Rodman had attracted numerous offers from teams worldwide, especially from England. It’s interesting how the NWSL’s salary cap complicated the negotiations; it was thought that an overseas deal would, at least, match what the Spirit could afford.
Negotiations had encountered some hurdles in the past. A deal was struck back in November 2025 but was ultimately voided by NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman, who felt it went against the league’s principles.
After that situation, it seemed more likely that Rodman might look overseas. However, the NWSL introduced a High Impact Player Rule, allowing teams to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million for exceptional players like Rodman, based on performance and marketability.
It’s touching to think about the emotions running high during the signing ceremony, with Rodman visibly moved by the entire process. “Trinity is a generational player. She represents the future of this club and women’s soccer,” said Spirit majority owner, Michelle Kang. The commitment shown reflects the belief that top talent deserves the best opportunities.
Rodman’s career has already been impressive, with 28 goals and 17 assists over five seasons with the Spirit, who chose her second overall in the 2021 NWSL Draft. This decision signals a strong commitment to building a competitive club that invests in talent and nurtures players over time.
