Can the Hoosiers win again in the 2026 season? Players share their thoughts.

Historic Win Marks Indiana Hoosiers’ Impressive Season

Monday’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game was a historic event, but the Indiana Hoosiers’ victory was unexpected. The team, led by Curt Cignetti, triumphed over the Miami Hurricanes with a score of 27-21 at Hard Rock Stadium, making the Hoosiers the first college football team to achieve a perfect run of 16-0. The final moment, when Jamari Sharp intercepted a deep pass from Carson Beck with just 44 seconds remaining, really highlighted this remarkable story in college sports.

Despite this monumental season, there are lingering doubts. Can Indiana sustain its success moving forward? I mean, can they keep up their dominance as they did in 2025? Winning the national title again and securing the No. 1 seed in future playoffs might be a tall order.

Interestingly, one player seems quite confident. Cornerback D’Angelo Pons, who was recently chatting with teammates at Raising Canes in Bloomington, mentioned, “I wouldn’t be surprised if Indiana comes back next year.” He’s planning to enter the 2026 NFL Draft, aiming to wrap up his college career on a high note as a national champion. His optimism is rooted in his trust in Coach Cignetti.

Pons has been with Cignetti since his freshman year at James Madison University. When Coach Cignetti transitioned to the Hoosiers, Pons followed. The shift has been significant, especially considering Indiana’s dismal record of 9-27 over the previous three seasons prior to Cignetti’s tenure. His candid response during a press conference about recruiting was striking, “It’s that simple. I win. Just Google it.”

Pons emphasized that trusting the process was vital: “I felt like no one expected us to do this, especially us coming from JMU.” His faith in Coach Cignetti’s abilities and the new standards established at Indiana led to this successful season.

Meanwhile, Jamari Sharp, who was already playing for Indiana when Cignetti took over, reflects on the transformation. After experiencing a difficult 3-9 season in 2023, the team rebounded dramatically, securing an 11-2 record this year. “This year has taught me a lot about brotherhood. It was a long journey, but our teamwork led us to win the national championship,” he shared.

Pons expresses hope for the future, citing Cignetti’s process-oriented approach. “He doesn’t dwell on the past. He’ll be right back to work, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we go back-to-back,” he said, hinting at the potential for sustained success.
