Trump Discusses Potential U.S.-Greenland Agreement Involving NATO

On Thursday, President Donald Trump shared insights about a possible agreement between the United States and Greenland, mentioning that NATO would play a role in the plans.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling back from Davos, Switzerland, to Washington, D.C., after the World Economic Forum, Trump highlighted that the agreement would be permanent and without an expiration date.

“It’s forever,” he stated. “You hear about ’99 and ’50, but it’s forever. We can do whatever we want to do. The military can do it. We can do whatever we want, and it’s under negotiation, and we’ll see what happens.”

He added, “There is no price, no purchase price.”

When asked about whether the U.S. would have “sovereignty” over Greenland in this potential agreement, Trump emphasized the significance of the deal not just for the U.S., but also for Europe.

“There are a lot of great things in this deal. Don’t forget, they are also good for Europe, because when we are good, they are good, and when we are not good, it’s not so good for them, because we are holding everything together,” he explained. “We’re keeping everything together.”

The president also noted that NATO would be part of the agreement and stated that the only expense to the U.S. would be the construction of what he referred to as the “Golden Dome.”

“We’re all going to work together. In fact, NATO is going to be involved with us. We’re going to work with NATO and coordinate with them. This is how it should be,” he said.

“There is no cost because there are no expenses other than the construction of the Golden Dome. We are going to build the Golden Dome and participate in that as well,” he elaborated.

Trump first outlined the framework for a potential agreement after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, announcing it on social media. He said, “Based on a very productive meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland, and indeed the entire Arctic region.”
