Heightened Security for Coach Deion Sanders in Colorado

In Colorado, there’s a growing concern for safety.

Deion Sanders’ bodyguard recently disclosed that the Buffaloes head coach faces an alarming average of five death threats each day. This unsettling detail came up during a team meeting that took place at the start of 2026.

Michael Rose, who is Sanders’ head of security, addressed the players in a video that was later shared by Deion Sanders Jr., Coach Prime’s oldest son. Rose made it clear that everyone needs to stay alert while in football facilities and emphasized that access to certain areas should be tightly monitored.

“I’m Officer Rose, the head of security for Coach Prime,” he informed the team. “For the newcomers, when you come to the facility, just be cautious about who you’re with, especially in the elevator. Don’t let anyone pressure you into scanning for floors—they may not have good intentions towards Coach Prime. And remember, if a door is closed, don’t force it open. They’ll have to deal with me when it does.”

Later, Sanders elaborated on why there’s always a protective presence around him. According to various reports, the tension stems from his prominence as a Black coach making significant strides in the sport.

Interestingly, the university is said to be investing quite a bit into security, paying $48,880 for the role focused on protecting head coaches.

Sanders reflected on the challenges he faces, noting, “We get death threats regularly. It’s because I’m a Black man making things happen—there’s something real about that.”

In terms of on-field performance, Sanders and his coaching staff have drawn a lot of attention. However, the results have been a mixed bag. The Buffaloes ended the 2023 season with a 4-8 record, improved to 9-4 in 2024, but faced a tough 3-9 outcome in 2025, largely impacted by injuries and significant roster changes. This included the absence of star players like Travis Hunter and starting quarterback Shedu Sanders, who is also Coach Prime’s son.

Despite the struggles, Sanders’ tenure has undeniably raised Colorado’s profile in the national sports arena.
