Rangers fall to Sharks led by Macklin Celebrini on the road

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Impact of Macklin Celebrini

Macklin Celebrini has clearly demonstrated what a top draft pick can do for an organization like the Rangers. His presence has sparked excitement, especially as the Sharks begin to unveil their potential, driven by a talented core of young players. On Friday night, they secured a 3-1 victory over the Rangers.

In their second matchup, Celebrini proved just as formidable as he did in the first. After netting a hat trick previously, he added two goals in this game, leading the Rangers to a disappointing defeat. With his first goal, he became the second-youngest player in the league to reach 50 career goals, trailing only Sidney Crosby—a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan, who coached Crosby during his time with the Penguins.

Celebrini contributed significantly to the Sharks’ early success, scoring two of their three goals in the first period within just 7 minutes and 37 seconds. It’s hard to believe, but the last time the Sharks scored that fast was when Celebrini was just five years old.

Meanwhile, the Rangers continue to struggle with their pre-game readiness. They incurred two penalties in the first three minutes of play, allowing two power-play goals before even getting a shot on target. Mika Zibanejad’s tripping penalty just moments into the game put the Rangers at an early disadvantage, prompting Sullivan to call a timeout early in the first period.

Interestingly, the Sharks, who had been on a power-play drought in previous games, took advantage of the chaotic situation created by the Rangers, scoring on consecutive power plays and managing a 2-for-7 success rate for the evening.

A critical turnover by Carson Soucy in the defensive zone led to Celebrini’s one-timer, making the score 3-0 before the first period finished.

As the game began, fans were already celebrating Celebrini’s achievements, chanting “MVP” in recognition of his recent accomplishments for Canada at the Olympics.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they’ve been giving opposing fans plenty to cheer about lately. For instance, in Boston, the crowd cheered for ten goals, while in Anaheim, they were hoping for some free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches.

At SAP Center, the Sharks also had a promotion offering three free Taco Bell tacos with every purchase following their three goals—a record-setting achievement in their venue. The Rangers, conversely, were unable to achieve their ninth shutout of the season, with Sam Carrick finally scoring and minimizing the Sharks’ earlier lead.

As the Rangers continue to regroup and plan for a younger, faster lineup, this game underscores the challenges they face in making that transition, especially when compared to rising stars like Celebrini and his team.
