Anti-AI Campaign Gains Support from Major Actors
Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are reportedly part of a group of 700 supporters for a new campaign against artificial intelligence in creative fields. The initiative titled “Stealing Is Not Innovation” emphasizes that appropriating the work of others should not be considered innovation, but rather theft.
“America’s creative community is the envy of the world, generating jobs, economic growth, and exports,” the campaign states. However, they argue that large tech companies, many funded by private equity, exploit the creativity of American artists without respecting copyright laws or obtaining permissions.
The movement asserts artists, writers, and creators are united in a straightforward message: “Stealing our work is not innovation. It’s not progress. It’s theft—plain and simple.”
The Human Artistry Campaign, a coalition comprising creators, unions, and industry groups advocating for rights in the context of AI, has spearheaded this anti-generative AI effort. They insist, “there is a better way” to coexist with technology.
While some AI companies are making ethical decisions to secure content through licensing and partnerships, the group argues a balance can be struck between advancing AI and respecting creator rights. “We can make AI advanced and rapid, and ensure that the rights of creators are respected,” they maintain.
Alongside the statement is a considerable list of supporters who have co-signed the declaration. The nearly 800 signatories also include notable names like singers Cyndi Lauper, LeAnn Rimes, and Martina McBride, as well as screenwriter Vince Gilligan and various bands such as One Republic and MGMT.
Johansson’s involvement in the anti-AI campaign isn’t surprising, considering she has publicly criticized AI in recent years. This was highlighted when she took legal action against an AI application in 2023, which used her likeness in an ad without permission.
Gordon-Levitt, last year, also partnered with Hollywood figures to establish the Creative Coalition on AI, aiming to combat unethical practices that seek to undermine creators’ rights through artificial intelligence.
