Mick Cronin’s Coaching Approach Includes Financial Education

Mick Cronin is not just teaching basketball—he’s also helping his players understand the financial landscape of their newfound earnings.

As college basketball enters 2026, this approach by UCLA coaches has become increasingly relevant. On Friday, they announced plans for tutorials on Roth IRA retirement accounts and other financial strategies, aiming to prepare players for managing their growing wealth. This season is significant as it marks the first time players are receiving a share of revenue from their school, alongside income from name, image, and likeness deals.

In discussing investment wisdom, Cronin has warned his players against certain traps. He emphatically stated, “I don’t want to hear about you investing in real estate. What do you know about it, anyway?”

Instead, he recommends them to consider savings accounts and S&P funds, which hold promise for long-term growth. He hopes that the players can navigate their financial situations without interference from family or friends.

“You know, the more people touch your money, the more complicated it can get,” he mentioned. “It’s not straightforward. Athletes today face unique pressures, especially from family members who may expect help.”

Cronin elaborated on the challenges young people face, likening the financial issues of college players to those experienced by NBA rookies. “My NBA buddies often ask, ‘How much does money really matter?’ It’s a complicated dance of responsibility,” he reflected.

He continued, drawing on his experiences: “It affects everyone differently—some find it easier to handle as they grow older.”

However, he cautioned against becoming too comfortable with money. Echoing sentiments from fellow coach Nick Saban, Cronin noted that comfort can be a hindrance for anyone striving toward their goals. “Having that much money doesn’t mean players will escape the emotional turmoil after a loss,” he remarked. “We won’t allow that in our locker room.”

In other updates, Cronin described shooting guard Skye Clark as “very questionable” for the upcoming game against Northwestern due to a hamstring injury. Additionally, new football coach Bob Chesney will be introduced to fans during the basketball game’s break on January 31.
