Maher Labels NYC Mayor a “Communist”
Bill Maher, the late-night talk show host, recently described New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani as a “straight-up communist,” cautioning that the Democratic Party might “lose more elections” if they refuse to acknowledge this reality.
During an episode of “Real Time,” Maher pointed out a debate among Democrats regarding whether Mamdani should be classified as a socialist or a democratic socialist. He suggested a straightforward conclusion to this debate.
“Let me settle this: he is a genuine communist,” Maher stated transparently.
He emphasized his belief after interpreting comments made by one of Mamdani’s advisers, Shea Weaver, who stated he would “elect more communists.”
“That’s fine. It’s a belief system. He’s allowed to believe it; people can vote for it,” Maher continued. “But if liberals deny that, just like during the Goth period, they will lose more elections. This is not a communist country.”
Maher expressed disappointment over how political ideologies seem to swing without finding a middle ground, leading voters to choose between two extremes.
“The reality is, our options are limited to either crony capitalism or a troubling version of communism, alongside backroom dealings every time the Trump family conducts business abroad,” he elaborated. “Or we have a candidate proclaiming, ‘I’m impoverishing the white middle class.’ Oh, there’s a catchy campaign slogan.”
Attempts to get a statement from Mamdani’s office received no immediate reply.
The phrase Maher referenced, “impoverishing the white middle class,” initially came from Weaver, who was appointed to lead the Mayor’s Office of Tenant Protection at the beginning of January.
Recently, internet users discovered a series of controversial tweets from Weaver, which have since been deleted.
Weaver also controversially called for the “seizure of private property” and argued that “home ownership is a weapon of white supremacy.”
Maher has remained critical of Mamdani and democratic socialism as a whole, advising voters and Democratic leaders to reconsider such ideologies.
Following Mamdani’s recent electoral victory, Maher sternly warned that the Republican Party would capitalize on Mamdani’s views.
“Democrats need to understand that Zoran Mamdani represents the party’s future. Unfortunately, it seems to favor Republicans,” he quipped. “And if you missed his victory speech, don’t worry—it’ll pop up in campaign ads over the next two years.”
While Maher acknowledged that Mamdani “seems like a nice guy,” he highlighted the increasing inclination within the Democratic Party toward candidates who lean socialist. He urged them to heed advice from another prominent figure from the recent special election before the broader left veers into a “socialist frenzy.”
