Tragic Death of Boy Following Shark Attack in Sydney
A 12-year-old boy from Australia has tragically passed away after suffering severe injuries from a shark attack in Sydney Harbour, as confirmed by his family on Saturday.
Nico Antic had been in critical condition since January 18, when he was attacked while swimming at Jump Rock, a popular spot for cliff diving near Shark Beach in Vaucluse, located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
His family shared their heartbreak in a statement, expressing their sorrow at losing their son. “Nico was a joyful, friendly, and athletic young boy with a kind heart. He was always so full of life, and that’s how we will remember him,” they said.
They extended their gratitude to first responders and medical teams at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, as well as the community for their support during this difficult time.
A GoFundMe campaign initiated by a family friend has raised over $266,000 as of Saturday evening.
The police reported that the attack occurred around 4:20 PM on January 18. Nico jumped from a 6-meter ledge into the water, where he received life-threatening injuries to both legs, presumably from a large shark.
Three of his friends quickly entered the water, brought him back to shore, and sought help. At that time, it was reported that he had lost both legs.
This incident is part of a concerning trend, as Australia has recently experienced multiple shark attacks in a short span. In response, many beaches have been closed to ensure public safety.
While Australia sees an average of about 20 shark attacks each year, fatalities are relatively rare, usually fewer than three annually, according to reports.
