Islanders Announce Isaiah George’s Call-Up Amid Injury Concerns

The Islanders have finally brought up Isaiah George before their recent game, though the context wasn’t exactly ideal. Ryan Purock is dealing with an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day, as noted by coach Patrick Roy.

This situation meant that rather than simply adjusting the lineup to fill in for Adam Boqvist, who might have been replaced if the defensive corps were fully healthy following the Islanders’ 4-1 setback in Seattle, George found himself paired opposite the Swede.

Scott Mayfield took over Purock’s usual spot, stepping into the top defensive pair, a role he had occupied earlier in the season alongside Matthew Schaefer.

Reflecting on his performance, George said, “I thought it was good. Of course, there were times I wanted my shifts to be better, but I felt comfortable. I’m getting back into shape, but I thought I handled the puck well and was seeing the ice.” He logged nearly 14 minutes on the ice during the Islanders’ disappointing 5-0 defeat to the Sabers.

Prior to the game, Roy reviewed a list of Bridgeport players that the Islanders had options on this year: Travis Mitchell, Marshall Warren, Cole McWardt, and now George. It seems that some of these players haven’t secured permanent roles yet, which may have contributed to George’s call-up.

Having played 33 games for the Islanders last season, George could have a significant opportunity ahead. There are whispers that the 21-year-old has noticeably bulked up since last year, which could address one of the concerns that limited his ability to finish the season on Long Island.

The player from Oakville, Ontario, showed promise last season with his calm demeanor and skating ability, yet seemed to falter as the physicality of the NHL took its toll. Roy noted that George’s previous struggles were partly due to a concussion in Toronto that set him back.

George has battled through two injuries this season but has shown solid performance recently, particularly since returning from his latest injury. Just before his call-up last Monday, he notched two assists in his last game.

He added, “I definitely want to avoid injuries. It’s a tough spot because I want to play well, but I am pleased with how I’ve persevered and kept working. Things have really started to turn in my favor these past few weeks.”

Meanwhile, Bo Horvat logged 19 minutes, 20 seconds on the ice after recovering from a lower-body injury, firing four shots on target.

Horvat remarked, “I felt really good. I think there are areas where I can improve—like my timing and footwork—but overall, I felt confident.”
