Eric Dane withdraws from ALS event at the last minute because of the effects of the disease

Eric Dane has been pulling away from ALS events, often at the last minute. It’s tough dealing with such debilitating illnesses.

The 53-year-old, known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” missed the ALS Network’s Champions for Cure and Care Gala that took place Saturday. He was initially meant to announce his ALS diagnosis back in April 2025 and also receive the Advocate of the Year award.

A spokesperson for the organization remarked, “We were informed Mr. Eric Dane wished to join us tonight for the Advocate Award, but sadly, he’s not in good enough health to attend due to the realities of ALS.”

The statement also expressed gratitude for Dane’s courage, dedication, and advocacy for the ALS community, emphasizing that they honor him with respect and support.

Broadway actor Aaron Lazar, who is also living with ALS, will accept the award on Dane’s behalf.

In September, the network announced that Dane was selected as Advocate of the Year, acknowledging his efforts to raise “international attention to ALS” through his “leadership and compassion.”

“This award isn’t merely an honor; it reflects the immense strength and courage within the ALS community,” Dane commented in a statement at that time.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurological condition that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle control challenges.

Now utilizing a wheelchair and with limited mobility, Dane has taken on the responsibility of discussing his ALS diagnosis to assist others facing similar battles.

“It’s really important to share my journey with as many people as I can because, honestly, my life feels like it’s no longer my own,” he shared during a virtual panel last month. “I’m a bit of a selfish person, so that’s been a struggle. I want to live my life for myself, but that’s no longer feasible. Otherwise, I don’t think I could ever move forward.”

The actor also mentioned that despite his family, which includes his estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters, being his top priority, ALS remains a significant concern for him.

Dane, who has largely stepped back from acting to concentrate on his health, portrayed a firefighter diagnosed with ALS in a November 2025 episode of NBC’s medical series “Brilliant Minds.”
